Pare che oggi sia il Mercoledì delle Ceneri. E il tono con cui Sister Maureen ieri sera ci ha detto: “Ci vediamo domani a messa” stavolta non ammette repliche. Le Ceneri son le Ceneri, non si scappa... Quindi levataccia, e chiesa. Ma abbiamo un piano. Ci sediamo un po' in disparte, lontane dalle nostre suore, stiamo lì un po' e poi, zitte zitte, senza dare nell'occhio, usciamo dalla chiesa e andiamo a cercare un posto per mangiare, cercando di tornare in tempo per la fine della messa.
All'inizio il piano sembra funzionare e, con un'emozione trepidante da forca scolastica, zompettiamo verso l'unico bar della zona e ci accaparriamo la bellezza di un uovo sodo a testa e un pezzo di dolce duro.
Purtroppo però ci rilassiamo troppo e, quando torniamo indietro, la messa è appena finita. Siamo ancora in tempo a mescolarci nella folla, ma c'è un piccolo dettaglio che non avevamo affatto considerato: la benedizione con la cenere! Orrore... tutti quanti hanno la loro brava croce grigia sulla testa, proprio tutti. Tutti tranne noi.
